Amazon began removing the standalone seller-eligibility gate for the Featured Offer — the Buy Box — in July 2026, rolling it out gradually across all stores through the end of the year. The EU and UK started on July 20. It is easy to read this as “the Buy Box just got easier to win.” It didn’t. Here’s what actually changed and who it touches.
What changed
Winning the Featured Offer used to be a two-stage process. First, Amazon ran an eligibility check on your seller performance — you had to pass it to compete for the Buy Box at all. Then, among the sellers who passed, it ranked offers on price, delivery speed, and service. Amazon is removing the first stage.
In Amazon’s own words: “Starting in July 2026, we’ll begin removing seller eligibility requirements for the Featured Offer.” The stated reason is that the first step is “no longer delivering additional value to customers.” Two things Amazon was explicit about:
- Selection criteria are unchanged. Amazon still picks the Featured Offer on competitive pricing, delivery speed, and performance. What’s gone is the pass/fail entrance check, not the standards for winning.
- No seller action is required. Existing offers are included automatically — nothing to enrol in, nothing to update.
The rollout began in the US in July 2026 and reached the EU and UK on July 20, 2026, with global completion expected by the end of 2026.
What it means for a private-label seller
The headline everyone else is running — “the bar dropped, everyone gets the Buy Box” — is the wrong read. Removing the entrance gate doesn’t change who wins; it changes who’s allowed to line up. Winning is still price plus speed plus reliability.
If you’re brand-registered and the sole seller on your ASINs, this barely touches your day-to-day — you were already winning your own Featured Offer. What actually changes is the mechanism: performance metrics that used to act as a pass/fail gate now feed the ranking directly. So a rough patch on order defect rate or late-shipment rate no longer just risks a hard disqualification you’d notice — it can quietly erode your Featured Offer share by degree, without ever tripping the suppression flag you were watching for.
If you sell on shared or reseller listings, expect a deeper pool of competing offers — sellers who were previously gated out on performance can now compete. Your price and delivery edge matters more, not less.
What to do about it
- Nothing to enrol — the change is automatic.
- Stop treating Buy Box eligibility as a binary. Watch your Featured Offer share percentage over time (the Buy Box percentage in your Business Reports), not just “am I eligible or not.” Under a graded system, a gradual slide is now your early-warning signal — it shows a price or performance problem sooner than a hard suppression ever did.
- Keep the inputs clean. Order defect rate, late-shipment rate, and Voice-of-the-Customer complaints now scale your rank continuously instead of gating it. They were always worth defending; now they cost you share by the point.
