LISTING GUIDE

Amazon listing suppressed: causes and fixes

Pause the ads first, then find the stated reason in Seller Central rather than guessing. Most suppressions come down to a non-compliant main image, a title beyond the category limit, or a missing required attribute — fix one thing at a time and confirm on the live listing page, not the upload confirmation.

What to do in the first ten minutes

Order matters here, because the expensive mistake is spending on a listing nobody can buy.

  1. Pause ads pointing at that ASIN. Every click is wasted and the conversion data is actively misleading.
  2. Find the stated reason in Seller Central's suppressed or listing-quality view. Do not start guessing from the listing itself.
  3. Check whether it is actually suppression rather than out of stock or stranded inventory. They look similar in a sales chart and have completely different fixes.
  4. Check account health while you are there. A policy issue behind the suppression changes the whole response.

What usually causes it?

In rough order of how often they turn out to be the cause:

  • Main image compliance. The hero image must be the product on pure white, with no text, watermarks, logos or props. This is the single most common trigger and the easiest to get wrong after a "harmless" creative refresh.
  • Title length or format beyond the category rule — and the limit varies by category, so check yours rather than assuming.
  • A missing required attribute for the category. Requirements change over time, so a listing that was fine for years can be suppressed without you touching it.
  • Prohibited claims in the copy, which is more common in supplements, health and anything making a performance claim.
  • Variation or parentage problems after a catalogue edit.

How do you fix it without breaking something else?

Change one thing at a time. Fixing five attributes at once means you will never know which mattered, and if it fails you have no way back.

  1. Correct the specific attribute the reason field named.
  2. Submit the change and note the date.
  3. Confirm on the live listing page. Amazon accepting an upload is not the same as the listing being live and correct — a silently rejected flat file is common.
  4. Only if it stays suppressed after reprocessing, open a case with the specific attribute and what you changed.

What happens after it comes back?

The listing returning is not the end of it. Expect the rank to be behind where it was, because the product stopped selling while it was hidden and Amazon ranks on sales velocity.

  • Restart ads deliberately rather than all at once, and watch that conversion recovers before pushing spend.
  • Watch for re-suppression for a few days. Flat-file changes sometimes revert.
  • Record what caused it. The same trigger tends to recur across a catalogue, especially image compliance after a creative refresh.

What this guide cannot help with

Suppression for a policy or intellectual-property reason is a different problem with different stakes, and it is not a listing-content fix. Neither is an account-level suspension. If the reason points at policy, IP, or authenticity, get specialist help rather than editing attributes and hoping.

We do not handle suspension appeals, and an agency that offers to without explaining what qualifies them is worth a second look.

Where to go next

Questions people actually ask

Most suppressions come from a missing or non-compliant required attribute — a main image that breaks the pure-white rule, a title over the category limit, or a missing required field for that category. Amazon hides the offer until the attribute is fixed rather than telling you plainly what broke.
Seller Central lists suppressed listings under inventory quality or listing quality, with a reason for each. Start there rather than guessing — the reason field usually names the attribute, even when the wording is vague.
Once the underlying attribute is corrected and Amazon has reprocessed the listing, it typically returns without an appeal. If it does not return after reprocessing, the cause is usually something other than what you fixed.
Yes, indirectly and sometimes persistently. While suppressed the listing stops selling, and Amazon ranks on sales velocity — so the rank decays. Recovery is usually slower than the suppression itself.
No. Pause them. You are paying for clicks to an offer shoppers cannot buy, and the resulting conversion data teaches the algorithm the wrong thing about that product.
Suppressed means the listing exists but is hidden from search for a content or compliance reason. Inactive usually means out of stock or closed. Stranded means you have inventory at Amazon with no active listing attached to it.
